Ocean of Emptiness serves as an immersive installation. Created using materials such as tinsel, crystals, plastic and a fountain in an effort to create a dark liminal space with a simulated atmosphere. The inspiration for this work comes from our mutual admiration of Yayoi Kusama's “You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies”. Both artists visited this work at the Phoenix Art Museum separately and were both were very inspired by it.
The work in this installation was born from the concept of the vastness of the our universe and the beauty, peace, yet fearful unknowing energy it carries. Themes for Ocean of Emptiness are about suspension of time, the act of slowing down in a society of urgency. We also want viewers to question spatial awareness and how we perceive the environment around us. We hope this show calls the viewer to reflect on "How can we be more dynamic in our lives, in our bodies? Am I able to I feel safe and separate myself in a space where energy and emotion is endlessly flowing, moving? What are ways to release the rigidness when embracing the present moment, when leaning towards the colorful prism, towards the dark of the un-known?
